Ramirez Fuentes Family
Nelson and Fernanda have been married for 20 years. They met in the mainland and moved to Roatan 22 years ago. They have 2 children: Nelson Jr. is 18 years old, and he’s in 12 grade. Nelson works and studies. He studies during the weekends and works during the week. He loves learning and is currently working as an electrician helper at a hotel in the maintenance department. He has worked as a construction helper and at a milk company as well. He makes around $16 per day. Nelson Jr. pays for most of his high school expenses, but his parents help him once in a while. Gabriela is 4 years old.
Nelson didn’t have the opportunity to go to school at all. He was abandoned by his dad when he was just a little boy. Shortly after, Nelson’s mom got sick and was diagnosed with dementia. She abandoned them and left him and his 4 siblings at his grandma’s house. Nelson and his siblings had to start working at a young age alongside their grandparents growing beans, corn, and bananas. They worked as much as they could to help not only their grandparents, but also to provide for their own food and any other personal expenses. Nelson moved to Roatán 22 years ago looking for better job opportunities. He started working at a hotel in the gardening and maintenance department. He worked in different hotels for over 10 years. Currently he still works as a gardener and takes care of a property, and has been working for the same person for the last 9 years; he earns around $20 per day.
Fernanda grew up with both parents and her 10 siblings. They lived in a very remote area and had limited access to a school. Fernanda’s parents did everything they could for her to finish up to 6th grade. After finishing 6th grade, she couldn't attend high school, so she decided to go alongside his siblings to work with their dad, who was a farmer. Currently, Fernanda stays at home taking care of her daughter Gabriela.
This beautiful family dreams of someday building a strong and secure place for their family to live in, a place they can call their own home. Let’s build a home for them!
