The Velásquez Mejía Family

Lesbi’s parents separated, her mom decided to travel to Roatán for work opportunities. Lesbi’s mom worked during cruise ships' high season as a housekeeper at a hotel and as a cook at a restaurant. She would spend a couple of months in Roatán and then she would travel back to the mainland to be with her children and return to her washing and sewing work there. Lesbi’s mom did everything she could to feed and to support her children. Lesbi moved to Roatán to live with her aunt when she was 17 years old to continue her studies and to start working with her aunt. She was able to complete her studies through 11th grade. About 2 years later she met Jairo and decided to marry him. Currently, Lesbi stays at home taking care of her children.

Jairo grew up with both of his parents and his 3 siblings. Jairo started working when he was 13 years old; he used to work as a gardener and cleaning somebody else’s property too. He was 14 years old when he started working as a construction helper, which he did until he was 18 years old. Jairo worked during the day and studied at night, but was unable to finish 12th grade. Currently, he works as a carpenter. He doesn’t work for somebody else, but instead works independently. Jairo’s salary depends on the cruise ship's seasons. During low season he makes around $20 a day, and when it is high season he takes on additional night shift work, bringing up his daily salary to around $35 - $40.

Jairo and Lesbi’s dream is to provide a safe and comfortable place for their children to live in. They can’t do it by themselves. They need our helping hand. Let’s build a home for this beautiful family. We can do so much more together!
